Why it Matters

Tending to the Islands’ Future

Farming on the islands comes with unique challenges. Geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, rising costs, and confusing regulations create barriers to access. That’s why the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild fosters collaboration, delivers responsive programs, and invests in long-term solutions to ensure local agriculture flourishes and that the island communities who depend on local food can too. Because when farmers succeed: we preserve farmland, increase access to local food, honor the island’s heritage and strengthen community resilience.

Collaboration

We organize and gather farmers, organizations, agencies, and food system leaders across San Juan County.

Strong local agriculture depends on strong systems – more than any one organization can provide alone. Trusted relationships, shared resources, and human power are the roots of the San Juan County food system. The Ag Guild works alongside farmers, nonprofits, public agencies, schools, markets, food access programs, and community partners across San Juan County to align resources and coordinate efforts to turn good intentions into real change.

“The San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild has been instrumental in helping us build a strong foundation for Ladybird Farm's inaugural year. As first-generation young farmers, there seems to be an endless list of new challenges and opportunities to navigate especially in regards to land transfers/land access agreements. The Ag Guild was able to connect us with folks that provided valuable guidance that allowed us to form a non-traditional lease agreement that we hope will be an outline that feels possible for others in the future.”
